How to Draw Manga - Drawing Female Chest & Torso
The chest and torso of a female manga character are a challenge to
most artists because of the shape and position of the breasts. No matter
what angle you draw the female body from; the breasts should be at a
forty-five degree angle from the line that should be drawn through the
middle of her chest. When most people draw breasts, they draw them
individually and they tend to look like balloons taped onto your
character’s chest. This makes the woman’s chest look fake and
disconnected with the rest of the torso. The breasts shouldn’t be shaped
perfectly round, but should curve out from the chest and slowly curve
back into the chest. After you have drawn a shirt over the body, don’t
forget to add shading to the underside of the breasts to give them
depth. The general shape of the torso is a trapezoid. The waist on a
female will be thinner than that of a male, so there will be a curve
when drawing from the ribs to the hips. Make sure you don’t make the
waist too thin or it will not look right.

When drawing the shoulders you need to know that shoulders are not flat.
When you draw the shoulders you have to give them a curve and a slope.
Then the shoulders will give way to the arms and also the rest of the
torso.
When the character’s arms are lifted, draw a line where the underarm
should be. When the arms are raised a part of the character’s back will
be showing. This gives the body a better dimension and a better sense of
reality.
Now you have created a torso for your character. Don’t forget the little
details like a bellybutton or lines in the skin indicating muscle and
lines indicating the ribs or even scars to give your character some
personality!
